Practical Information

Travel

Beatenberg, the longest village in Europe, lies 1200 m above sea level along a mountain ridge 600 m above Interlaken. Aside from hourly, 30-min bus rides from the train station Interlaken West, Beatenberg can also be reached by car or taxi.

Interlaken is connected to the airports of Zurich (ZRH), Basel-Mulhouse (BSL), Geneva (GVA), and Frankfurt (FRA) by train.

Arriving by car

When driving to Beatenberg, make sure to plan your trip via Interlaken. The shorter but more tortuous route through Sigriswil is not recommended in the summer and closed in the winter.

Arriving by public transportation

Your destination by rail is "Interlaken West." You may want to check www.sbb.ch to look up train schedules and order tickets. Enter "Beatenberg, Hubel" as final destination. In addition to single trip or return tickets, there are also other options available, which you can check here.

Between 5am and 10:40pm, there are numerous connections from Zurich Airport to Interlaken, which take about 2:10-2:20. Travel times are only magrinally higher from Basel, about 3h from Geneva and 5h from Frankfurt airports.

Buses for Beatenberg leave Interlaken West hourly, typically a few minutes after the hour, between 7am and 11pm (consult www.sbb.ch). Travel time is about half an hour.

Weather

Monthly averages can be found here, but winter conditions can be quite volatile in the mountains. If possible, come prepared for a 20-min walk outside, i.e., equipped with sufficiently warm clothes and good shoes. In clear weather, Beatenberg offers a stunning view of the Alps and beautiful winter landscapes, so don't leave your camera at home, either.

Activities

There are uncountable possibilities for alpine and cross-country skiing in the Bernese Oberland. Beatenberg also has a sledging route, and you can enjoy starlit rides on Fridays and Saturdays (more info here). Look no further for some more inspiration! There is a small but quite convincing winter sport shop in Beatenberg, http://www.grossniklaus-sport.ch/. You can rent skis, snow shoes, and other winter sport gear here if you do not bring along your own gear and want to skip the trip to Interlaken.
