Financial Support for Young Scientists
The Young Scientist Award consists of a financial contribution towards the costs of travel and subsistence and was made possible by the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr).
Eligibility criteria
Eligible are graduate students, post-graduate students and post-doctoral fellows with a maximum age of 30 (or a maximum age of up to 35 in exceptional circumstances such as e.g. parental leave).
Evaluation criteria
A limited number of these scholarships are available and the applications will be judged based upon the need for support, the student’s current interests, upon how the school will benefit their studies and research, and upon the quality of the recommendations. Preference will be given to those young scientists who have published in IUCr Journals and to young scientists with a crystallographic background.
How to apply
In order to be considered, applications should consist of:
- a current student Curriculum Vitae (no more than two pages).
- a short (1 page) recommendation letter from the supervisor or head of the department/group etc. This letter should confirm the status of an applicant (PhD student, graduate student etc) and explain why the applicant would benefit from attending the school, need financial support and should include current relevant academic and/or research experience.
- completed registration process for the school.
- a brief motivation letter stating from the applicant
a) the reason for applying for financial support
b) the amount for which you apply and list provisional travel costs (provide as many details as possible).
A single file, in PDF format, should be electronically submitted by the applicant to pds2016@psi.ch with “YSA scholarship application” in the subject line.
All recipients of the Young Scientist Award will receive a 50 % reduction on the registration fee. Payment instructions for the reduced registration fee will be advised by latest 20 June 2016.

If a Young Scientist Awardee with a scholarship cannot attend the school, he/she must inform the local organising committee immediately.
Payment of the award
All awardees shall receive the payment (against presentation of E-ticket, airfare receipt, boarding passes and accommodation receipts) during the meeting. An IUCr certificate will be contextually awarded.
IUCr Scientific Freedom Policy Statement
The Organizing Committee of the Powder Diffraction School 2016 (22 - 26 August in Villigen, Switzerland) shall observe the basic policy of non-discrimination and affirms the right and freedom of scientists to associate in international scientific activity without regard to such factors as ethnic origin, religion, citizenship, language, political stance, gender, sex or age, in accordance with the Statutes of the International Council for Science.
At this school no barriers will exist which would prevent the participation of bona fide scientists.
