Abstract:
Bulk metallic glasses are strongly out-of-equilibrium materials, contain no long range order, and can have extraordinary macroscopic properties. The configurational entropy characterizing the disorder is however low compared to the liquid, suggesting a constrained microscopic state. The present talk will consider the nature of these constraints in terms of geometrical frustration and allowed bonding topologies, and how these can lead to emergent structural length scales and relaxation times --- material properties that can be probed using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy.
