Description

Abstract:

In Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), one key parameter for obtaining an accurate solution is a high-quality computational grid. This task is rather challenging in complex flow configurations and industrial problems. In this light, we will exhibit the construction methodology of some complex flow meshes, out of which we will focus on the Stairmand high-efficiency cyclone separator.

The seminar is a two-manifold; In the first part, we will talk about some meshing strategies to obtain a high-quality grid using the commercial masher Pointwise. This will also include a presentation of some meshing projects that were conducted during my internship at PSI.

In the second part, we’ll discuss some preliminary results that we obtained for an investigation of the flowfield inside a gas cyclone separator. This flow configuration is deemed to be one of the most common swirling flow benchmarks in CFD. In the present work, the Wall-Modeled Large Eddy Simulation (WMLES) is tested in the cyclone separator at Reynolds number Re = 280,000.

The next step in the ongoing project is to assess the cyclone performance by studying the particle deposition efficiency. This will be done by introducing discrete particles and tracing them using Lagrangian Particle Tracking (LPT) algorithm in the in-house code T-Flows.
