Discussion

Status of pre-project elements:

Photoinjector improvements

Injector design:

  • Some progress on agreement between model and experiment
  • More work on modelling and understanding of energy spread required before we can perform detailed design work on a new injector. Also depends on the gun we will use.
  • 3-bunch operation could be tested with a split Mizar beam (with Alcor as first bunch)

Gun test stand:

  • Rasmus and Thomas will get together for a first rough outline.
  • The test stand should also address the question of how to handle three bunches in the machine
  • This test stand could also profit from R'Equip, but on a later timescale.
  • Possible contribution from CHART (the gun test stand could be useful for high-bunch-charge operation as required for FCC-ee) (Paolo)

6-GeV Test Stand in Porthos arm

  • R'Equip proposal to be submitted next spring. Requires survey of potential users.
  • Main problem now is availability of installation time and manpower during SLS-2.0 construction phase.

Advanced Acceleration

  • Promising recent results from colinear wakefield acceleration experiment with dechirper.
  • Using such a wakefield accelerated witness bunch for lasing is technically conceivable, but still requires a lot of development - most likely beyond the timescale of Porthos. But addressing some of the open questions in the framework of the Porthos pre-project may make sense.

Choice of undulator type and configuration, synergy between Aramis and Porthos

  • Marco Calvi on vacation, we wait for his assessment of helical SCU and SCAPE afterburner as candidates for Porthos.
  • Hard to reconcile all experimental requests with the existing boundary conditions. We should get back to the users and request a prioritization of their wish list... how important is it to reach 25 keV photon energy?
