When you describe a slice of pizza, you don’t usually care about the fact that it consists of a set of interacting quantum fields. Similarly when describing some physical system, you can construct effective theories which model only the features you are interested in, whatever the underlying reality might be. In this talk, I will discuss the general philosophy behind effective theories, the application to quantum fields and how that might help in the search for new physics.

The discovery of an electric dipole moment (EDM) of any fundamental particle would be a breakthrough in the search of physics beyond the Standard Model. So what makes the neutron an interesting candidate? How does the n2EDM experiment aim to measure the neutron EDM (nEDM) with unprecedented sensitivity? And what are the experimental limits? Join us as we dig into the intricate workings of this second-generation experiment, currently undergoing commissioning at PSI.
