IHEP and its large scientific facilities

This talk provides an overview of the latest progress in large-scale scientific facilities at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP). Regarding accelerator-based facilities, the presentation will cover the operation and ongoing upgrade program of the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPCII). Additionally, the research and development status of the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), a proposed Higgs factory with a 100 km circumference, will be introduced. Beyond colliders, IHEP is actively engaged in multidisciplinary research. The institute is currently constructing the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), a state-of-the-art synchrotron facility. The talk will also highlight the status of the China Spallation Source and ongoing research in beam-driven plasma acceleration, both of which are key development areas at IHEP.
Furthermore, the presentation will provide an overview of other significant scientific facilities. These include the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) project for neutrino physics, the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) for cosmic ray studies, and various in-space research platforms dedicated to astrophysics.
Status of HEPS

High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) is a 6 GeV, 4th-generation storage-ring light source, and is the first high-energy photon source in China. A modified hybrid seven-bend achromat (7BA) lattice has been developed to push the natural beam emittance down to 34.2 pm·rad while preserving high-brilliance X-ray synchrotron radiation. A total number of 14 beamlines will be installed in phase I, providing high-energy, high-brilliance, and high-coherence X-rays with energies up to 300 keV, while up to 90 beamlines can be accommodated. The construction of HEPS was launched in Huairou, Beijing in Jun 2019 and is planned to be completed by the end of 2025. The injector was successfully commissioned in 2023, while the electron beam stored in the storage ring exceeded 10 mA in Aug. 2024. This talk will present an overview of the HEPS project and its current status.
