Energy Systems Analysis at PSI

Laboratory for Energy Systems Analysis

The Laboratory for Energy Systems Analysis (LEA) at PSI conducts analytical research on energy technologies and energy systems. LEA develops models, methods, and tools to support the analysis of complex energy-system questions and to inform long-term planning, technology assessment, and policy-relevant decision-making.

LEA combines expertise in energy-system modelling, environmental assessment, technology assessment, and decision support. Its work addresses current and future energy options, including renewable, fossil, and nuclear technologies, and contributes to the evaluation of pathways for sustainable and resilient energy systems.

LEA publishes the magazine "PSI Energy Compass: Navigating the energy transition" twice per year. Subscribe for free: https://www.psi.ch/en/lea/psi-energy-compass

Technology Assessment Group

The Technology Assessment Group is part of LEA and conducts interdisciplinary assessments of energy technologies, energy strategies, and transition pathways. Its work considers environmental, economic, social, and risk-related aspects and aims to support transparent and evidence-based decision-making in Switzerland and internationally.

In its decision-support work, the group applies methods such as life cycle assessment, environmental assessment, risk assessment, and Multi-Criteria Decision Aiding (MCDA). These approaches help compare alternatives, examine trade-offs, incorporate stakeholder preferences, and support decision processes in energy, environment, and sustainability contexts.
