COLD: Cool copper Operation Linac Demonstrator at ESRF
by
WBGB/019
A 6GeV linac is considered as an option to replace the present ESRF injectors (linac+booster). This upgrade is a necessary milestone to enable next generation light source features for EBS.
The very high gradient 77K C3 distributed coupling accelerating structures technology proposed by SLAC is considered for the ESRF. This enables to build an extremely compact (~130m) linac, fitting in our present site. The use of pulse compression and 4microsecond RF pulses at 4Hz would also represent a major reduction of the number of RF-units needed. A small scale demonstrator COLD (Cool copper Operation Linac Demonstrator) is planned to test this technologies and is composed of: a photogun (and it's laser) a cryomodule hosting 2x1m accelerating structures, an high quality factor pulse compressor and the relevant diagnostics to characterize: 6D beam phase space, gradient, energy, dark currents, reliability and maintainability.
