The MAX 4^U project targets a transformative reduction of the MAX IV 3 GeV storage-ring emittance to below 75 pm·rad, achieved within stringent boundary conditions. This talk will present the key accelerator-physics and engineering challenges behind this surgical upgrade, and show how MAX 4^U is designed to secure MAX IV’s competitiveness well beyond the end of the decade.
