Description
Intensity Modulated Particle Therapy (IMPT) nowadays is without doubt one of the most effective state-of-the-art methods in fighting cancer. This advanced radiation delivery method, using a scanned pencil beam of energetic particles, is standardly applied at PSI and features unique advantages in administering dose to the tumor volume while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue to the most. However, the technical setup needed for this technology is still significant and requires a larger investment. Therefore, when particle therapy was introduced as a standard product to the market throughout the last decade, Varian Medical Systems’ ProBeam™ Platform focused on protons, the lightest ion species, accelerated by a superconducting cyclotron. Besides its small footprint, this accelerator is characterized by a high reliability and uptime. A high degree of automation allows a nearly operator less beam production and predestines this machine for use in a clinical environment. The presentation gives an overview on Varian Medical Systems’ ProBeam™ superconducting proton cyclotrons, including status of the installed machines and machines under commissioning and factory testing.
