STFC Daresbury operates an Energy Recovery Linac (ALICE) test accelerator, the non-scaling FFAG demonstrator EMMA, and is currently working towards a new FEL test facility, CLARA. This later programme has demanding goals in synchronisation, stability and short photon pulse generation, raising diagnostic challenges. An overview of diagnostic and laser activities on our existing accelerators, such as optical beam arrival monitors, laser based bunch characterisation and fast beam position monitors, and there development for CLARA, will be given.
