Description
Particle accelerators are an outstanding success story of science and technology. Emerging from the first RF accelerator in the 1920's, today about 30,000 accelerators are being used for science, industry and health around the globe. This sustained development has been made possible by improvements of "conventional" accelerators but also by the invention of new methods and technologies. The presentation will discuss some of the new ideas that are being pursued today. The R&D status and the plans will be presented with a particular focus on European efforts and the plans within the German Helmholtz association. The ATHENA (Accelerator Technology Helmholtz Infrastructure) project, a common proposal by five Helmholtz centers and one Helmholtz institute, will be introduced. Contact: Rasmus Ischebeck, 5535
