The presentation introduces briefly an overview of the LHC accelerator and summaries the operation of the first run period. It explains the main motivation for the first Long Shutdown, LS1, and summaries the experience with the beam commissioning and performance ramp up in 2015. The second half of the presentation introduces the HL-LHC upgrade projects and discusses the main time lines and technical challenges for the project.
