Description
In this work the advantages from the use of the OPAL (Object Oriented Parallel Accelerator Library) framework in modelling transport lines of cyclotron-based proton therapy facilities are discussed. Overcoming the limitations of simplified first-order models, the new beam dynamics models with OPAL precisely reproduce several types of measurements and reveal to be an important tool in supporting the commissioning and daily operation of the PROSCAN facility at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). For the first time, Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) techniques are applied on a beam dynamics model of proton therapy transport lines. In the context of SC gantry project, an improvement of the optics design is achieved with UQ methods. This demonstrates the flexibility and potential of UQ not only for facilities already in operation, but also to support the development of new proton therapy concepts.
