The main goal of this presentation is to highlight the importance of CFD accuracy to support nuclear reactor design, licensing and operation. In particular, my personal contribution to this very topic will be the focus of this talk. This involves the generation of one-of-a-kind reference databases for a variety of academic and industrial applications. And how these reference databases are utilized to validate and develop RANS based advanced turbulent heat flux models. Finally, the performance of these advanced turbulence models, for the accurate prediction of flow and heat transfer, for a variety of nuclear applications will be demonstrated. These applications include the thermal fatigue in a T-junction; idealized and randomly arranged pebble bed configurations; bare and wire-wrapped fuel assemblies; homogenous corium pools; and fluid-structure interaction in fuel rods.
