An intrinsic property of Quantum Theory is that measurements of observables are described by probability distribution functions. In many-particle systems we typically focus on expectation values, i.e. the averages of such PDFs. In ultra-cold atomic systems it is possible to access the full PDF for certain observables, which poses the question what one might learn from them either in equilibrium or out of equilibrium. In order to answer this question I will discuss theoretical approaches for determining the PDFs of observables both in and out of equilibrium for quantum magnets in D dimensions.
