The Ultrafast X-Ray Summer School (UXSS) is an annual meeting on X-ray science aimed at PhD students and post-docs, in its 19th iteration. The program consists of lectures given by distinguished scientists in core areas of X-ray Science, topical focus and technical talks, a tour of the  Swiss Free Electron Laser (SwissFEL), and guided hands-on project work in which the participants work out a mock proposal for beam time which will be evaluated at the end of the school.

The plenary lectures cover the foundational principles and current state-of-the-art in ultrafast X-ray applications across a broad spectrum of scientific domains:

  • Fundamentals of X-ray free-electron lasers

  • Theory of x-ray matter interaction

  • Atomic and molecular physics

  • Ultrafast chemical dynamics

  • Condensed matter physics

  • Structural biology

  • Matter in extreme conditions.

The focus talks and technical notes will cover current topics related to ultrafast X-ray sciences:

  • Attosecond science

  • Coherent diffractive imaging

  • X-ray optics

  • Detector technologies

  • Sample delivery systems

  • Quantum simulations.

We hope you will join us for a productive and instructive event this summer.

The Organizers:

Camila Bacellar & Christoph Bostedt (PSI, local chairs)
Dominik Oberthür (CFEL/DESY, co-chair)
Benjamin Ofori-Okai (PULSE Institute/SLAC, co-chair)

The Ultrafast X-ray Summer School (UXSS) is jointly organized by CFEL, the PULSE institute at SLAC, and the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). The summer school has a long history dating back to the first UXSS in 2007. The UXSS 2025 is hosted by the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland. The School is generously supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Swiss Quantum Initiative, and our sponsor: Dectris, SmarAct & XRnanotech.
