Description
Applying nanotechnology to liquid crystalline materials is a promising research area. The nanoparticles can produce interesting optical properties in the liquid crystals. This effect results in lower operating voltages for liquid crystal devices. In this study, we discuss the presence of nanoparticles in a nematic liquid crystal mixture and the determination of the order parameter in pure and nanoparticle-doped liquid crystal materials. Nanoparticles with a concentration of 3% by weight create nanocolloids. At such low concentrations, the nanocolloid appears similar to a pure liquid crystal with no apparent evidence of nanoparticles because the low nanoparticle concentration does not perturb the director field in the liquid crystal medium. It has been observed that nanocolloids exhibit a higher order parameter than that of a pure liquid crystal.
