Description

Presentation aims to give a very brief introduction into neutron spectroscopy. Inelastic neutron scattering probes the dynamics of materials by measuring the energy exchanged between neutrons and a sample during scattering. This allows access to a wide range of phenomena, including atomic diffusion, molecular rotations and vibrations, phonons, magnons, crystal-field excitations, and other magnetic or electronic processes. Atomic and magnetic excitations govern key properties including heat capacity, thermal transport, electrical behaviour, and the interactions between atoms. Neutron scattering provides direct access to excitations and yields data that can be compared with theoretical models. It is one of the most powerful techniques for measuring phonon and magnon dispersions, investigating phase transitions, and studying hydrogen dynamics in condensed matter systems.
