Description

The spin-lattice interaction is of central importance in magnetic solids. Being able to coherently move atoms and by that, directly affecting magnetism is not only interesting for manipulating magnetic properties, but studying it in real time allows to address a completely new view on the interactions itself. Here we use THz pulses to drive ions and fs X-ray pulses from X-Ray Free-Electron-Lasers (XFELS) to probe its motion and the underlying magnetism. The first case addresses electromagnons, hybrid magnon-phonon excitations, where we determine the spin and ion motions in real time [1,2]. This allows us not only a direct view on the magnetoelectric coupling, but also open the door for defining a time dependent magnetic Hamiltonian that could describe the magnetic interactions during the coherent motion in a lattice vibration. The second example addresses the circular drive of ions, its angular momentum [3] and its time reversal symmetry breaking in connection to the possible induced magnetization [4].
