Description

MAVKA is an X-ray micro-probe beamline for the Ukrainian research community, built within the LEAPS initiative “Light for Ukraine” by PSI, SOLARIS, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and partner institutions on straight section 2 of the 1.5 GeV SOLARIS ring in Kraków. It is designed for 0.5–12 keV and will serve three planned stations that follow the 2023 survey of the Ukrainian user community: UHV micro-XPS/XAS/XRF, ambient-pressure HAXPES and micro-probe XAS/XRD.

This talk reviews the progress since the last USyNC workshop. The front end, designed at PSI on the SLS 2.0 model, is in production at PSI, and the source will be a refurbished U19 in-vacuum undulator from the Swiss Light Source. The beamline layout and ray tracing are complete. The first stage uses the first mirror and the cryo-cooled Si(111) double-crystal monochromator (2.5–12 keV) from the SLS microXAS beamline; a plane-grating monochromator for 0.5–2.5 keV is planned in the same beam path. Ray tracing predicts $10^{12}$–$10^{13}$ photons/s in micrometre-sized spots focused by Kirkpatrick–Baez mirrors. Further components no longer used after the SLS 2.0 upgrade are being integrated into a new lead-shielded optical hutch, designed together with SOLARIS, whose shielding is being optimised with FLUKA Monte Carlo calculations. Stations 1 and 2 are being prepared with partners in Germany (DESY with Helmholtz partners) and Poland (SOLARIS). Station 3 starts with pilot experiments in the optical hutch, with a goniometer and a PILATUS 2M detector from PSI. First light is planned for the end of 2027 and pilot experiments for 2028.

Acknowledgement: The project team gratefully acknowledges the CHF 1.5 million grant from the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The project is partially supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Poland (contract 1/SOL/2021/2).
