Description

The Ventspils University College (VUC) and the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) collaborate in the field of thermo hydraulics and structural mechanics. Such studies are relevant in the context of high power target development and other heat transfer problems relevant for particle accelerators. An example is the ongoing study for further optimization of a rod-bundle type target installed at SINQ. Subjects and details of the future collaboration will be discussed, which includes the development of infrared temperature measurements for studies of heat transfer in flow boiling over a bundle of horizontal tubes filled with lead, and at a beam entrance window of a liquid metal target. The utilization of High Performance Computing Facilities for joint scientific projects related with thermal-hydraulic studies for large scientific facilities at PSI, will be discussed. In addition a brief overview will be given on the general research conducted at the IT Faculty of VUC, as well as the scientific interests of the new joint VUC Research Institution: the VIRAC. This institution has been re-founded in 2010 and its activities include space and environment research, the utilization of a planned VUC/VIRAC clean room facility, and other themes.
