Description

EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB is the new flagship project of Frascati National Laboratories of INFN, a new FEL user facility will be realized exploiting both the higher accelerating gradients of X-band structures and plasma acceleration cells.
An S-band injector (RF gun + 3 traveling wave structures) will pre-accelerate the electron beam, while a full X-band booster made of 16 accelerating structures will bring the beam to a maximum energy of 1 GeV (500 MeV in case plasma cells will be used).
Following this new project, a series of preparatory activities started few years ago at LNF, in order to develop the required experience and know-how especially on the X-band technology. The most important being the commissioning and operation of an high power test facility called TEX (TEst-stand for X-band) in collaboration with CERN. The main goal of such test stand is to address the majority of the R&D challenges of EuPRAXIA in a smaller environment well ahead of time. One of the main tasks is the design and high power test of X-band waveguide components (such as directional couplers, RF loads, pulse compressors, mode-converters) and accelerating structures prototypes. In the next future also high efficiency or high repetition rate klystron tubes tests will be carried out. Moreover, the development and test of X-band Low Level RF systems will be of paramount importance, since at present there are no commercial solution available on the market.
