Integrated photonics needs film lasers as thin as possible, yet an asymmetric planar waveguide guides light only above the cutoff thickness $h_c$ of its fundamental mode. We examine lasing in the critical regime, $h\approx h_c$, where the TE$_0$ effective index $N$ approaches the substrate index $n_s$, and show that Lummer–Gehrcke (LG) modes [1] are its sub-cutoff special case.
The samples...

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) coated with stimuli-responsive polymers are promising hybrid nanomaterials for plasmonic and sensing applications [1]. Polymer shells provide steric stabilization and allow the nanoparticle surface to be functionalized [2]. In this work, AgNPs coated with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) were synthesized by a photochemically assisted method. The order in which...

Magneto-optical effects, arising from the interaction of polarized light with exchange splitting and spin-orbit coupling, have long been powerful tools for investigating the electronic structure and magnetic domains of magnetically ordered materials. In this lecture, we will revisit the fundamental principles of magneto-optical phenomena and review their main types, including transmission...

Oxide perovskites have attracted increasing interest for photovoltaic applications due to their structural stability, tunable electronic properties, and potential for optoelectronic devices. Among these materials, barium stannate (BaSnO₃) exhibits promising characteristics, including a cubic crystal structure and high electron mobility. However, its wide band gap limits its absorption of the...

Second-principles lattice models have recently enabled large-scale simulations of complex polar textures in ferroelectric perovskite oxides, including vortices, skyrmions, merons and related inhomogeneous domain structures [1-3]. In displacive compounds, it is known that extra charge can induce local tuning of displacive motions, being for instance at the origin of anti-distortive polarons...

Acceptor doping is the standard route to raising the mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ of lead-free piezoceramics for high-power and resonant applications, but in solid-state processed ceramics the same additive also changes sintering behaviour, so gains in $Q_m$ are often confounded with changes in porosity. We separate these two effects in BNT-BT-KNN ceramics modified with 0 to 0.5 wt% MgO and...

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics are widely recognized for their high hardness, excellent thermal stability, and chemical inertness. However, the inherent brittleness of pure (SiC) matrix remains a primary limitation for demanding structural and armour applications. In this study, the effect of graphite inclusions on the mechanical performance and sintering behavior of SiC-based ceramics was...

The increasing use of high-frequency electromagnetic technologies, including advanced radar systems, millimetre-wave communications, and emerging sub-terahertz applications, creates a growing demand for lightweight, flexible, and efficient electromagnetic shielding materials. Conventional conductive shields predominantly reflect incident radiation, whereas practical applications increasingly...

β-Ga2O3 thin films have gained significant research interest due to their wide bandgap, high thermal stability, and high breakdown voltage, making them suitable for e.g. UV photodetectors. In this work, undoped and Sn-doped β-Ga2O3 thin films were deposited on c-plane sapphire substrates via ultrasonic spray pyrolysis extending our previous studies based on conventional spray coating. The use...

We demonstrate that spatial dispersion plays an important role in optical properties of layers of plasmonic (interacting) nanoparticles. It results particularly in the dependence of the effective optical properties of such structures on the angle of incidence of the exciting light as well as on the orientation of the lattice in relation to the plane of incidence even though formally such...

Thermal management plays a crucial role in improving the efficiency of next-generation electronic devices, renewable energy systems, and building thermal regulation. Among thermal management technologies, phase-change materials (PCMs) have attracted considerable attention due to their ability to store and release large amounts of latent heat during nearly isothermal phase transitions [1]....
