Description
CHART R&D towards a CCT option for FCC dipole magnets

Introduction: In 2015/16 a memorandum of understanding and an addendum were established between PSI and the FCC Design Study at CERN. One subject of the collaboration is the Canted-Cosine Theta technology and its potential application in an FCC main dipole magnet. The initial program duration is three years. An important goal of the program is the construction of a technology model magnet, proving the feasibility of some key features enabling CCT technology to be used in the FCC design study. To this end, the program coordinates closely their activities with the CCT program in Berkeley (LBNL).
In June 2017, the design of a first PSI-built CCT magnet CD1 (Canted Dipole 1) underwent a conceptual design review (http://indico.cern.ch/e/cd1cdr). It was recommended that PSI build up coil-manufacturing infrastructure in order to perform all steps of magnet manufacturing in house.

Charge to the review committee: The goal of this review is to evaluate the readiness of the PSI team to build the CD1 magnet in house (winding, reaction, instrumentation, impregnation, mechanical assembly and loading).
The questions to the review committee are as follows:
  1. Have the components of CD1 received sufficient care in terms of quality assurance?
  2. Is the PSI infrastructure ready for the construction of CD1?
  3. Have all the relevant manufacturing steps been addressed in terms of tooling, commissioning, and testing prior to building CD1?
  4. Are procedures available and of sufficient quality for the critical manufacturing steps?
  5. Is the manufacturing plan realistic?
