Application for "pre-project" money:

  • Marco Stampanoni and Thomas Schietinger have put together, in a cloak-and-dagger operation, a proposal to apply for pre-project money from the PSI directorate funding.
  • Work packages defined for insertion devices, beam dynamics, RF, kicker development, detectors and management. Diagnostics developments are missing in this proposal, we will apply for resources there at a later stage (once we know the bunch separation).

Building extension: (Ivo Widmer und Andreas Gottstein):

  • First plan for an OSFA extension will increase OSFA volume by 23300 m3 (initial volume is 93600 m3).
  • Estimated cost for the building extension is 40-50 MCHF for construction including infrastructure (such as cabling, climate etc.).

Undulator design: (Xiaoyang Liang for Marco Calvi)

  • Apple-X with 15 mm period appears feasible, but complex, in particular with cryogenic magnet arrays.
  • Why not provide polarized beams with a phase retarder (diamon crystal), as demonstrated in SACLA? (See M. Suzuki et al., J. Synchrotron Rad. 21 (2014) 466-472.) (Suggestion by E. Ferrari.) Seems straightforward, but G. Aeppli does not like the idea (to be found out exactly why...).

Linac upgrade: (Paolo Craievich)

  • Given the significant building cost, we will probably have to go with a modest upgrade not involving further building extensions. Sven suggest one additional C-band station in linac-3 and two more C-band stations in the Porthos arm. In conjuction with an injector upgrade, this could bring us to 7 GeV without too much infrastructure extension.
  • Future studies should focus on this energy - this would eliminate some of the many different options.
