Description

Unravelling the response of microscopic degrees of freedom in photoexcited cuprates is a central challenge in ultrafast materials science. While the charge response has been extensively investigated via time-resolved (tr-) optical spectroscopy and tr-ARPES, the nonequilibrium dynamics of magnetic degrees of freedom remain largely unexplored due to the lack of a direct probe. The advent of high-resolution RIXS instrument at high-repetition-rate X-ray FELs now enables high-quality tr-RIXS measurements at the Cu L-edge, providing a window into the underlying magnetic excitations. In this presentation, I will discuss our tr-RIXS experiments on the photoexcited electron-doped cuprate Nd2-xCexCuO4. We track the light-driven response of the paramagnon as a function of time and momentum, revealing a transient modification of the dispersion and a spectral weight redistribution within the Brillouin zone. These results highlight the intriguing prospects of manipulating magnetic degrees of freedom via light-matter interactions in quantum materials.
