Description

The short wavelength and high photon energy of x-rays offers unique opportunities to selectively probe coherent dynamics in solids. In this talk I will give a brief overview of how x-ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopy can, in combination with selective pump pulses ranging from THz to UV, identify coherent spin and lattice dynamics on different length scales. I will present as an example recent work on coupled spin and lattice dynamics in antiferromagnetic CoF$_2$, as well as a study of GeTe where separate measurements of the dynamics of short- and long-range order can be used to identify the nature of the equilibrium ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition [1].
