We have developed an all-electronic setup for synchronizing X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses in phase with microwave pulses at carrier frequencies up to 40 GHz, achieving sub-picosecond timing jitter. We demonstrate the capabilities of this synchronization scheme performing X-ray-detected ferromagnetic resonance experiments at an XFEL. In this experiment, conducted at the Maloja end-station of SwissFEL, the precession of the magnetization in the ferromagnet permalloy (Ni₈₁Fe₁₉) is excited by the magnetic field of a microwave resonator and probed by the X-rays exploiting the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism effect. This precessional motion was then revealed by scanning the microwave phase. This demonstration represents an important step toward implementing microwave pump experiments at XFELs and exploiting the femtosecond time resolution of XFEL pulses for detecting magnetization dynamics.
