Description
Airports are increasingly required to balance operational efficiency, environmental responsibility, infrastructure adequacy and socioeconomic contribution in an increasingly evolving aviation industry environment. This study proposes the Airport Sustainability Performance Index (ASPI), a multi-criteria assessment framework for Greek regional airports using PROMETHEE II and a panel dataset which covers the airport network during 2018-2024 period.
The proposed framework integrates environmental, operational, infrastructure and socioeconomic dimensions through a set of indicators derived from the airport sustainability literature, airport planning studies and environmental reports. The analysis covers aspects related to carbon emissions, energy efficiency, water management, seasonal pressure, employment stability, environmental sensitivity and infrastructure adequacy. Emphasis is given on the adaption of sustainability indicators to the characteristics of the dependent from tourism regional airports, where they operate in islands.
Unlike other traditional airport efficiency studies that focus mainly on traffic volume and financial performance, the proposed approach aims to provide a broader assessment framework oriented to sustainability, capable of depicting the multidimensional dynamics of airports efficiency.
The PROMETHEE II methodology is deployed to generate annual sustainability rankings and comparative net flow scores for the airports, enabling the identification of sustainability leaders, transitional airports and airports facing structural sustainability challenges.
The study contributes to the growing literature on airport sustainability assessment and multi-criteria decision analysis by introducing a longitudinal sustainability benchmarking framework adjusted to regional airport systems. The findings are expected to support the academic community and the industry, airport operators, policymakers, aviation stakeholders in designing more balanced and data-driven sustainability strategies for regional aviation networks.
